MicroTeach Portfolio Tasks

The purpose of this module is to provide you with practice presenting a short lesson that is enhanced with technology. Your students will be four or five members of your class. This lesson should:

  • reflect your ability to integrate at least 2 of the applications (environments) that you have learned into a cohesive lesson.
  • apply current instructional principles, research, and appropriate assessment practices to the use of computers and related technologies.
  • evaluate, select, and integrate computer-based instruction into the curriculum for a specific chosen grade level.

The products for this module will include the following:

Task #1 Design the instruction.

Create the instructional design :

It is strongly suggested that you start with an existing lesson plan or combination of lesson plans developed in your other classes or located on the Internet. Develop the lesson with these assumptions:

  • Your students already know how to use the computer (you will not be teaching students how to do something on the computer!)
  • Establish a focus for the lesson, developing activities and closing activities
  • Analyze the lesson that you have created and determine how you would evaluate the students participating in the lesson. An evaluation instrument (test, project, etc.) does not have to be created; however, you must give a clear explanation of how you expect to evaluate the students at the conclusion of your lesson.

Task #2 Word Process the lesson plan.

Using the template developed earlier in the semester, correctly word process your instructional design. This will include:

  • Use the "indent marker" to hang all numbers or letters used for itemizing.
  • Include a footer with page numbers, centered.
  • DO NOT use tabs except for multiple-column lists or a "leader".
  • Add at least one graphic object (in-line graphics are not acceptable for this assignment)
  • Proof-read (no grammatical or spelling errors)
  • Single space within categories with paragraphs hung using the indent marker
  • Instructional materials section should be a bulleted list
  • Save the lesson plan as [yoursectionnumber][yourlastname]lp into your [yoursectionnumber][your lastname]mt folder.

Make 6 copies of the lesson plan. Bring the copies as well as all materials to class on the day of the MicroTeach sessions.

Task #3 Teach the lesson to four of your classmates.

A successful MicroTeach session includes:

  • Your microteach should be no longer than ten minutes.
  • All group members are provided with a copy of your lesson plan (which means you will make 6 copies) NOTE: A complete MicroTeach session consists of teaching the lesson to the students, providing students with all materials (files) needed to participate in the learning environment you have created, and providing participants with copies of your lesson plan at the time you teach. DO NOT wait until class time to print out the lesson plans. They must be prepared ahead of the MicroTeach session.
  • Your classmates and instructor will evaluate your performance using this form.

Task #4 Complete the Self-Evaluation for Microteaching and turn your materials into the dropbox:

Word process the Self-Evaluation for Microteaching form after you actually teach your lesson. This is a reflection on your teaching experience with your peers. Be sure to:

  • Use block paragraph form (no regular paragraph indents, all text blocked to the left-hand margin)
  • Hang the paragraphs using the indent marker
  • All text single spaced, but use Format>Paragraph to set a double space between paragraphs
  • Use spell check so there are no spelling, typo or grammatical errors
  • Save the self-evaluation as [yoursectionnumber][yourlastname]eval into your [yoursectionnumber][your lastname]mt folder.

Task #5 Complete the final reflection for the course.

Write a journal reflection that is at least a half page, single-spaced, that answers the question:

"What are the technology-related events and/or experiences in your teacher education program that you believe will most serve you in your daily classroom instruction?"

Please feel free to include examples from all of your experiences in all of your courses.

Save the file as [yoursectionnumber][your lastname]finalj and place in your [yoursectionnumber][your lastname]mt folder.

Task #6 Turn in the [yoursectionnumber][your lastname]mt folder to the dropbox! The folder will have these files:

  • [yoursectionnumber][yourlastname]lp
  • [yoursectionnumber][yourlastname]eval
  • [yoursectionnumber][your lastname]finalj
  • Copies of all files created for and used in your MicroTeach lesson

El Fin!
