Social Studies Connections

Economics:
Students used the CD-ROM, Louisiana Forests Forever, available from the Louisiana Forestry Association, to make the following connections:

  • Louisiana's largest crop is timber.
  • Papermaking is only one of the industries that rely upon forestry. Many of the everyday products we use come, in part, from trees
  • There are many careers that are related to the forestry industry.

History:
Students investigated the time needed to grow a mature tree by exploring the historical events that occurred during the lifetime of a single tree. Students were given a tree cookie from an 80 year old tree and the date the tree was cut down. Students marked the tree rings with important events that occurred during the life of the tree. Using Timeliner, a software published by Tom Snyder Productions, students created their own timeline graphic.

Geography:
Students reviewed the CD-ROM, Louisiana Forests Forever, available from the Louisiana Forestry Association, to discuss the following:

  • Ecosystem and Stewardship
  • Parks
  • Recreation
