eBook Guide Schedule divider

Begin by reading about an eBook in the Activity Types web site. Then, design your own eBook! Choose a story for your eBook that you might be able to use for some purpose in your teaching career! eBooks are an excellent way to introduce your students to stories about people, places, and things, including historical topics, geographical places, cultural events, or very important people. In fact, you might want to check out the digital storytelling activity types included in our list! Any of these types of stories are appropriate topics for your eBook! To learn more about Digital Storytelling, chekc out these videos that explain how digital storytelling can be used across the curriculum and across grade levels to develop writing skills while teaching digital video skills. Students practice writing without even knowing it because they focus on the technology! Try viewing each of the videos (OR if you are using dial-up, download the PPT presentation with script in the notes section--yes, an eBook to read!)

2) Create your BASIC ebook:

  • Move your eBook outline from Inspiration to PowerPoint

    • Open the Inspiration diagram of the plan for your eBook
    • Click on the Outline button to change to the Outline view (remember, if you have bullets on a topic you should have at least 2 subtopics!)
    • Select File>Export to bring up the export dialog box
    • Click on the tab that says "PowerPoint Slides" and then click Save
    • Select a name for your eBook, make sure the "Save As Type" box is set to "Microsoft PowerPoint (*.ppt)" and click Save.
    • Double-click to open the file in PowerPoint.
  • Using the INTEL materials as a tutorial OR the first six steps of the 15-Step CheatSheet, create the basics of your PowerPoint eBook. Print out your basic eBook as a handout and bring to class. Your basic eBook should consist of:
    • 5-10 Slides
    • An ending slide called "Questions" that has the JPEG of your Concept Map for this eBook inserted as a graphic
    • Slide design/template selected with proper font size, style, colors
    • At least one graphic (ClipArt or Picture from File) on each slide (but no more than 2 graphics to a slide)
    • One sample of Word Art
    • One hyperlink somewhere in the eBook
    • One consistent transition between each slide set to loop automatically every 3-4 seconds and the entire presentation set for kiosk
    • One sample somewhere in the presentation of sound/movie addition (sound from file, narrated voice file, movie clip)
    • One consistent transition between each slide
    • Zip file (of your folder with final completed PPT document and any sound or movie files) submitted to Dr. F as an email attachment (send to cfigg@brocku.ca)
    • Printed as a handout with 3 slides to a page

3) Advanced PPT Skills: Making your eBook a multimedia event!

4) Submit the zipped file (per instructions found in your 15-Step CheatSheet) to Dr. F at cfigg@brocku.ca
